Epilepsy Review

Review Timescale

Patients diagnosed with epilepsy, currently needing treatment, should be reviewed at least annually.

If you have epilepsy, it means you have had repeated seizures. A seizure is a short episode of symptoms caused by a burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain, typically lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes.

In general, seizures are well controlled by treatment in about 4 in 5 cases, so it is important to review your treatment with a trained health professional to ensure the treatment you are receiving continues to be the right treatment for you.

As with our other long term condition reviews, we invite patients to come in for review sometime around their birthday month. There is no specific day for this, which allows patients to make their appointment for a time they find convenient.

Review Forms

It would help the practice conduct a more thorough and efficient review if you complete this online epilepsy review form 1 - 2 weeks before your appointment.

Please note if you have a combination of epilepsy AND one or more of: asthma, COPD, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes or coronary heart disease; you should fill this form in instead.

What will happen during your appointment

At the review the clinician will talk about your symptoms, discuss any seizures you’ve had since your last appointment, and review your medication.

If you are a female aged between 18 to 55 years old, the clinician will also take the opportunity to discuss any relevant issues relating to women’s health, particularly if you are thinking about having children.
